This is a quick exercise to introduce systems thinking in relation to boundaries, and can also be a bit of an icebreaker.
To try, give students 5 minutes to write down as many sentences as possible in the following format:
In the system of _______ I am a __________.
For example: In a system of this class, I am a student.
Ask students to share out, and reflect on the following questions:
Are there boundaries to your system? IE: What is in, and what is out?
How do I feel about the role I have in this system?
Does my role change if I shift the langauge of the system? Does the system change if I adjust the name of my role?
